There is destruction. Dead doctors, scientists, and Harry Osborn
(still alive) lie in the rubble and mess that was Osborn Industries. The
entire laboratory was demolished. Norman Osborn is no where to be seen.
Meanwhile, Peter Parker, in his new Spider-man outfit, is again using
his new-found powers to get money in the wrestling industry. After
winning yet another wrestling fight, Spider-man goes to the main office
to get his earn, but the money has been stolen. Since Spider-Man is the
only wrestler with a secret identity, everyone blames him. Spider-man
escapes before things turn nasty.
Swinging away, and undressing, now as Peter Parker, walking down a
street, Peter notices a robbery. The robber races down the street, past
Peter. The shop owners run over to Peter, as the robber gets away. The
owners tell Peter he could have easily stopped the robber. Peter says he
has his own worries. Getting home, Peter is approached by his aunt and
uncle, who have a letter from Peter's school saying that he is failing
his subjects. May and Ben talk to Peter about how Peter always wanted
high grades, and now he doesn't care about anything anymore. Peter tells
them off, and runs away.
Peter jumps over rooftops, thinking about how he wishes he could
tell everyone of his abilities. Peter thinks of somewhere he can go, and
he goes to Kong's house. Later, there is a party at Kong's place, and
everyone is there. Peter is still there also, getting flirted with by
Liz Allen, who was drinking that night. Mary Jane comes in the room, and
thinks Peter is with Liz, and runs off. Peter runs after her to
explain, but Uncle Ben is at the front door, and grabs Peter. Ben talks
to Peter about what he was thinking, Peter doesn't know. Ben tells Peter
that his father wanted Peter to become something in his future. That
Peter could help people in his future. And that great things will happen
in his future. And with those great things will also come great
responsibility. Peter then asks Ben where his father is, and runs off.
Later, a monstrous beast is in an alley way, looking for cloths. Peter
is on a rooftop thinking; he needs to tell May and Ben what is going on
with him. He jumps off the roof, heading home. As he walks home, he
notices many police cars at his house.
Norman Osborn reiterates the incident with Peter that happened at
Osborn Industries to his board of directors. He wishes to sway them so
that they can do the same thing to him, but with his own DNA instead of
that of a spider. Elsewhere, Peter and MJ are attending a local
professional wrestling match where Crusher Hogan is willing to take on
all-comers.
When Flash's pal Kong tries to take on Hogan, he is stopped since
he is not 21. A confrontation between Flash and Peter then happens, but
MJ gets disgusted and leaves before anything can develop. That night,
Peter, wearing a makeshift costume, goes back to the arena to fight
Hogan for the money. Peter handles him with ease, gets the money, and is
invited by the manager to come back on Monday to fight for more money.
At home, he secretly gives the money to Ben and May with an anonymous
note that says the money is from a special collection at the school.
At school, Peter is approached by his gym teacher who used to
berate him. He is looking for Peter to join the basketball team to help
fill Flash's spot. Peter does so with relish when Flash protests and he
quickly becomes the star player, thanks to his powers. Later, he has to
blow off studying with MJ so that he can go wrestle Crusher Hogan again.
He does so with ease and the announcer gives him his stage name
of the amazing and spectacular Spider-Man, though Peter asks just to be
called the Spider. While the manager is pissed about Peters anonymity,
he asks Peter to come back again and gives him a better get-up. It turns
out to be the familiar red and blue costume, sans spider and webbing
which Peter remarks it needs. Elsewhere, Norman is shown being strapped
in for the experiment by Doctor Octavius (with his metal arms). Harry
walks in, but is escorted out before it begins. However, he returns and
hears his father scream.
Peter
Parker is back in school. Wondering what the hell is happening to him,
he realises that he suddenly has bigger muscles, and some enhanced
athletic ability. In gym class, he throws a basketball into the face of
Flash Thompson when Peter sees him hitting on Mary Jane.
Outside,
Flash doesn’t take too kindly to this and starts a fight with Peter.
Parker dodges each blow with ease until he eventually catches Flash’s
punch and breaks his hand. Threatening to sue unless the Parkers pay the
hospital bill, May and Ben come down hard on Peter, who sneaks out of
the house that night to an abandoned warehouse.
He soon
realises his strength has grown beyond his wildest dreams, and he can
easily support the weight of a car. He finds his acrobatic ability has
improved too, and he can easily jump the height of a small building.
Norman
Osborn, after hearing of Peter’s fight with Flash, tells his son Harry
to invite Peter back to the lab, so he can once again apologise for the
spider incident. Distracting Peter with other subjects in the OZ
project, scientists distract him while another takes a blood sample.
Furious, Peter storms out and disappears.
After some
analysis, it turns out Peter isn’t dying after all, and that the effects
of the spider’s bite have altered his metabolism to that of an Olympic
athlete. Norman Osborn decides the time has come to test the OZ project
on a human.

At Osborn Industries, Norman Osborn
is hard at work with his genetic technicians. They are using various
subjects, such as spiders, on the OZ project. As Norman has to talk with
his lawyer over the phone urgently, his assistant fails to cap the
container on the spider case, and the arachnid escapes. Elsewhere, in
Queens, Peter Parker
reads a chemistry book in a mall food court. As he tries to study, some
rowdy teenagers pester him by throwing food. A sympathetic red-head (Mary Jane Watson) looks on with sadness. Before the other teens can stir up more trouble, Peter's uncle, Ben Parker, shows up and wrangles Mary Jane into a conversation with Peter and him.

In the previous issue Harry Osborn had taken LSD, which made him fall
into a clinical Psychosis. This issue begins with Peter as Spider-Man
now watching through their apartment window as Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane
Watson are at Harry's bedside. The Osborn's family doctor Ray tells Gwen
and Mary Jane that Harry has been taking drugs again. He gives Harry a
shot of Thorazine, a tranquilizer to offset the effect of LSD.
Spider-Man decides to do a quick change on the rooftop and go inside
where he is then confronted by Norman Osborn.
Norman blames Peter for what has happened to Harry and later in
this issue cracks under pressure returning to the Green Goblin persona.
Peter on his way to the Daily Bugle building feels a cold coming
on from the change of climate between Montreal and New York. While
talking to Robbie Robertson at the Bugle dropping off some pictures of
the Hulk from his Montreal assignment, J. Jonah Jameson walks in and
tells Robertson about Parker to "get this disease ridden menace out of
my building."
Before Peter leaves he points out that Robbie should have Jameson send
him a bonus check for about two hundred dollars for the pictures.
When Norman leaves his son's bedside he begins to think how he
has failed him as a father. Then he starts to hallucinate and sees his
enemy Spider-Man coming at him, soon he flees from the apartment out
into the street until he gets to Manhattan's lower eastside.
There in a place he had almost forgotten lies his Green Goblin paraphernalia. Then after returning to the Goblin persona he decides to kidnap Gwen.
She is standing at the window of Peter and Harry's apartment wishing
there was some way she could do to help Harry when the Green Goblin
comes flying into view.
When Spider-Man finally swings back to the apartment all he finds
is a pumpkin lantern and satchel left behind by the Green Goblin. He
soon realizes that Gwen has been kidnapped and that he must rely on his
Spider-Sense to lead him to where the Goblin is. His Spider-Sense leads
him to a New York city bridge which in the original comic Spider-Man
calls the George Washington Bridge because it is Norman Osborn's
favorite President but it is drawn like the Brooklyn Bridge (this has
been later changed to the Brooklyn Bridge in future retellings but the
original story was written to include the George Washington Bridge) where he spots the Green Goblin standing next to a motionless Gwen Stacy.
At the bridge Spider-Man attempts to get to Gwen but must fight the
Goblin with everything he has. Both Spider-Man and the Goblin fight
until the Goblin swoops down knocking Gwen off the side of the bridge.
Spider-Man then goes to save her and as his Webbing catches her, her
neck breaks and she dies instantly.
Spider-Man praises himself as he cradles the lifeless body of
Gwen until he realizes that she is dead. The Goblin taunts him saying
that "she was dead before your webbing reached her! a fall from that
height would kill anyone before they struck the ground".
Holding the lifeless body of Gwen in one arm Spider-Man raises
his fist into the air vowing to destroy and make the Goblin pay for the
death of the woman he loved. On the final page we get to see the title
of the story "The Night Gwen Stacy Died".

Continued from last issue... Gwen Stacy is dead, thanks -- in part --
to the Green Goblin, who is racing away vowing to Spider-Man that he
will soon be joining his true love. Spider-Man, furious over the tragic
loss of Gwen, swears that if anyone is going to die this day, it's going
to be the Goblin. Chasing after his mortal foe, he manages to hop on
the Goblin's back and pummel him. However, the Goblin manages to get
away when he slams Spider-Man into the side of the George Washington
Bridge.
Returning to Gwen's body, Spider-Man fights off those who have
gathered around her corpse and cradles her in his arms, reflecting on
their relationship together. When the police try to get an ambulance to
give her medical aid, Spider-Man tells them that she's dead and that he
killed her. When they try to take him for questioning, he fights them
off and flees. Changing back to his civilian identity of Peter Parker,
he ponders just what to tell his best friend Harry Osborn about his
fathers involvement in Gwen's death. When he arrives back at their
apartment, Peter finds that Harry is still fighting off his recent
overdose of LSD, and angrily leaves Harry who begs for help.
Deciding to bring Osborn to justice, Spider-Man drops in on Joe
Robertson who has just heard the news. He pleads Joe to find out if
Norman Osborn has been seen in the last few hours. When Joe gets word
that Osborn has been seen near one of the warehouses that he owns,
Spider-Man is about to leave when J. Jonah Jameson bursts in calling
Spider-Man a murderer. Spider-Man stifles Jameson with webbing before
going after Osborn.
Spider-Man battles the Green Goblin in the warehouse, determined
to bring him to justice. However, during the fight, the Goblin's glider
is reactivated and when the Goblin tries to impale Peter with it, he
only succeeds in impaling himself when Spider-Man dodges out of the way.
With the Goblin apparently dead, Spider-Man finally getting what he
vowed earlier that day, finds Osborn's death a hollow victory. When the
authorities can be heard coming, Spider-Man decides to leave, unaware
that someone is watching in the shadows.
When Peter finally returns home to his apartment, he finds only
Mary Jane there waiting for him. She tries to console Peter, who lashes
out at her condolences, mocking her usual carefree nature and tells her
to leave. However, Mary Jane decides to stay and comfort Peter
regardless.

deshacerse de Spider-Man.
