Ultimate Spider-Man #4 - With Great Power

" WITH GREAT POWER "

There is destruction. Dead doctors, scientists, and Harry Osborn (still alive) lie in the rubble and mess that was Osborn Industries. The entire laboratory was demolished. Norman Osborn is no where to be seen. Meanwhile, Peter Parker, in his new Spider-man outfit, is again using his new-found powers to get money in the wrestling industry. After winning yet another wrestling fight, Spider-man goes to the main office to get his earn, but the money has been stolen. Since Spider-Man is the only wrestler with a secret identity, everyone blames him. Spider-man escapes before things turn nasty. 

Swinging away, and undressing, now as Peter Parker, walking down a street, Peter notices a robbery. The robber races down the street, past Peter. The shop owners run over to Peter, as the robber gets away. The owners tell Peter he could have easily stopped the robber. Peter says he has his own worries. Getting home, Peter is approached by his aunt and uncle, who have a letter from Peter's school saying that he is failing his subjects. May and Ben talk to Peter about how Peter always wanted high grades, and now he doesn't care about anything anymore. Peter tells them off, and runs away. 

Peter jumps over rooftops, thinking about how he wishes he could tell everyone of his abilities. Peter thinks of somewhere he can go, and he goes to Kong's house. Later, there is a party at Kong's place, and everyone is there. Peter is still there also, getting flirted with by Liz Allen, who was drinking that night. Mary Jane comes in the room, and thinks Peter is with Liz, and runs off. Peter runs after her to explain, but Uncle Ben is at the front door, and grabs Peter. Ben talks to Peter about what he was thinking, Peter doesn't know. Ben tells Peter that his father wanted Peter to become something in his future. That Peter could help people in his future. And that great things will happen in his future. And with those great things will also come great responsibility. Peter then asks Ben where his father is, and runs off. Later, a monstrous beast is in an alley way, looking for cloths. Peter is on a rooftop thinking; he needs to tell May and Ben what is going on with him. He jumps off the roof, heading home. As he walks home, he notices many police cars at his house.

Ultimate Spider-Man #3 - Wannabe

" WANNABE "

Norman Osborn reiterates the incident with Peter that happened at Osborn Industries to his board of directors. He wishes to sway them so that they can do the same thing to him, but with his own DNA instead of that of a spider. Elsewhere, Peter and MJ are attending a local professional wrestling match where Crusher Hogan is willing to take on all-comers. 

When Flash's pal Kong tries to take on Hogan, he is stopped since he is not 21. A confrontation between Flash and Peter then happens, but MJ gets disgusted and leaves before anything can develop. That night, Peter, wearing a makeshift costume, goes back to the arena to fight Hogan for the money. Peter handles him with ease, gets the money, and is invited by the manager to come back on Monday to fight for more money. At home, he secretly gives the money to Ben and May with an anonymous note that says the money is from a special collection at the school. 

At school, Peter is approached by his gym teacher who used to berate him. He is looking for Peter to join the basketball team to help fill Flash's spot. Peter does so with relish when Flash protests and he quickly becomes the star player, thanks to his powers. Later, he has to blow off studying with MJ so that he can go wrestle Crusher Hogan again. 

He does so with ease and the announcer gives him his stage name of the amazing and spectacular Spider-Man, though Peter asks just to be called the Spider. While the manager is pissed about Peters anonymity, he asks Peter to come back again and gives him a better get-up. It turns out to be the familiar red and blue costume, sans spider and webbing which Peter remarks it needs. Elsewhere, Norman is shown being strapped in for the experiment by Doctor Octavius (with his metal arms). Harry walks in, but is escorted out before it begins. However, he returns and hears his father scream.

Ultimate Spider-Man #1 "Powerless"

" POWERLESS "

At Osborn Industries, Norman Osborn is hard at work with his genetic technicians. They are using various subjects, such as spiders, on the OZ project. As Norman has to talk with his lawyer over the phone urgently, his assistant fails to cap the container on the spider case, and the arachnid escapes. Elsewhere, in Queens, Peter Parker reads a chemistry book in a mall food court. As he tries to study, some rowdy teenagers pester him by throwing food. A sympathetic red-head (Mary Jane Watson) looks on with sadness. Before the other teens can stir up more trouble, Peter's uncle, Ben Parker, shows up and wrangles Mary Jane into a conversation with Peter and him.

SPIDERMAN DEL 1 AL 700 (# 55)

¡ LA VICTORIA DEL DOC OCK !

Continued from last issue... Wanting to get revenge on Dr. Octopus for putting his Aunt May in the hospital, Spider-Man begins tracking down the various lairs of his henchmen to try and locate his enemy. Dr. Octopus appears on a monitor screen and taunts Spider-Man that he will not be caught before he launches his latest scheme. Returning to his civilian guise, Peter visits his Aunt May in the hospital, then goes with Mary Jane to his aunts home to assess the damage, when they're joined by Gwen Stacy. Later that night, Dr. Octopus attacks a shipment of a new weapon nullifier device being transported by the military. When Parker is nowhere to be found, Jameson has his home called even though it's 3:00 in the morning, the call is not received very well by Harry Osborn. When Peter tries to stop Dr. Octopus from stealing the device, they fight across a lab owned by Stark Industries. The fight is ultimately ended when Dr. Octopus uses the device on Spider-Man, causing him to be struck with amnesia. Deciding to capitalize on this good fortune, Dr. Octopus convinces Spider-Man that he is a criminal in the employ of Dr. Octopus.

¡ LOS TENTÁCULOS Y LA TRAMPA !

Back in Manhattan, Spidey has scoured the whole city unsuccessfully searching for Octopus. “Wherever he is, I guess he’s safe for now,” he says. (Heh. Yes, but is May safe?) He returns to his apartment (where "Harry must be out on a date!") and decides to call Aunt May. The phone rings, just as Ock is paying May the "first month's rent in advance." ("That should keep her out of my hair until my plans are complete," he thinks.) As May talks to Peter, Otto climbs the stairs, finds his room, puts his suitcase on his bed and opens it. His metal arms come writhing out, holding his communicating equipment. (Not sure how the arms and their harness and the communicating equipment all fit in that little suitcase, though.) "Now that Spider-Man is dead (Did I mention that Ock thinks his bomb killed Spidey last issue?) and I’ve found a far better hideout than I expected, I can again make plans to steal the priceless nullifier," he states, "Luckily all of my men were not captured when my career as the Master Planner was cut short by the accursed Spider-Man!" He uses his equipment to contact his flunky (who has apparently been waiting at his station for a call for the last twenty issues) and declares, "Your wait is over! Soon we shall strike again!" Meanwhile, Ock's equipment is wreaking havoc on Aunt May's TV reception. "I wonder if Dr. Octopus could fix it for me?" she says, "He seems so very capable!"

The following morning, in the Manhattan "pad," Harry Osborn (tying his bow tie) calls into Pete's room to see if he wants any breakfast. Pete has left his door open and has been busy mixing up web-fluid with his Spidey suit hanging in plain sight on his closet door. Calling out, "Just a second, Harry! Be right with you!" PP closes his door and loads the web fluid into his extra cartridges on his belt. When he opens up again, Harry has turned sullen. "I can't wait for you to lock everything up tight as a drum before you'll talk to me," he says, "If you're afraid I'll steal something, just move out!" And he goes off to visit his father. (Actually, Harry has a good point here. How would you like it if your roommate locked his bedroom door and wouldn’t let you even look at his stuff?)

 Following a strange sketchy panel that doesn’t look like Johnny drew it, Peter tells May "I've some studying to do" and leaves the house. He hangs out, watching from across the street until dark. (In a nice moody panel showing Peter from behind as he lurks under a tree; his head and shoulders covered in shadow.) He changes to Spider-Man but still hesitates to attack "because of Aunt May." Still, when a delivery is made to the house for Ock ("Must be equipment for some new crime!"), Pete knows he must act. (This is another nice panel with Spidey’s head in profile in the foreground and the entrance to the house in the distance, with light spilling out of the house, throwing the deliveryman and Ock into shadow.)

Spidey perches on a clock tower, trying to cool down. He gets so preoccupied that he forgets where he is and the "Bong!" of the clock's bell surprises him so much, he topples right off. It is a simple matter to shoot a web to stop his fall but the striking of the clock also reminds him that he is "due in class soon.” "Lucky I'm carrying my civvies in my web-sling,” he says, and he swiftly makes his way to Empire State University.

As he web-slings on campus, Spidey spots Flash Thompson and Gwen Stacy. (Even though they are very tiny in the panel, you can tell who they are because Flash is in his blue Army uniform and is pointing up at Spidey while Gwen is in the green dress and chartreuse hat she wears in the rest of the scene. I think you can credit the anonymous colorist for their recognizability.) They spot Spidey, too. Flash tells Gwen that he is the webhead's biggest fan. She asks him how he knows Spidey isn't someone he'd dislike under that mask. "Not a chance, doll-face," he says. Just then, Harry Osborn walks up. He asks Flash and Gwen if they've seen Peter. "I'm sick of being his social secretary. All I do is take messages for him because he's never around!" Flash says, "He'll never change! Once an itch, always an itch! Right, Gwen?" and Gwendy cryptically replies, "Don't ask me, gents. I'd rather itch than switch!" (Everybody recognize the inspiration of Gwen's statement to be the Tareyton cigarette slogan, "Us Tareyton smokers would rather fight than switch?" Everyone know there used to be cigarette advertising on TV?)

Meanwhile, Spidey has lifted a section of the gymnasium roof so he can sneak in and change into his civvies. (What the heck is that roof made out of, anyway? And why is it so easy to lift out a panel to sneak in?) He is just putting his shirt on over his costume (while standing on a walkway high off the gym floor) when he hears footsteps. Quickly, he manages to change clothes and leaps to a climbing rope that is attached to the ceiling. (I know, I know, this is all pretty convenient. Just roll with it.) He doesn't realize that his Spidey mask is sticking out of the back of his pants. As he scoots down, Professor Warren pokes his head into the gym. Now down on the floor, Peter tells the Prof that he was "just taking a little workout." Warren is impressed. "I never realized you were so agile, son!" Then, noticing Pete's exposed Spidey mask, he says, "Better tuck in your undershirt, though." Peter nervously complies, thinking, "Lucky he's so near-sighted. He didn't see the web pattern." (Aren’t those glasses he’s wearing supposed to compensate for his near-sightedness?) Before leaving, the Professor tells Pete he has two "extra tickets to tonight's science exposition." He invites Peter and a friend to join him.

Out in the hallways, Pete meets up with Gwen. ("Say!" she says, "Aren't you the one who picked a peck of pickled peppers?" I think it is lines like this that made some people very happy to see Gwen go.)

The two thugs carry Spidey into a brick room with a single door, through which the third thug pushes a resisting JJJ. There are big spigots on the walls and what looks like a metallic medicine ball in the middle. Oh oh. This is looking familiar. Spidey is still knocked out as the thugs secure him to the ball. The third thug pushes Jonah down into position as JJJ yells at Spidey, “you wall-crawling weasel, wake up!!” The water already starts pouring in before the thugs get out of the room. In fact, the last one racing out has just got to have gotten his feet wet. Outside of the room, the Kingpin’s assistant Flint, turning the wheel that controls the water, tells his boss that “It shouldn’t take more’n five minutes!” The Kingpin, his back to Flint, holding his cigarette holder imperiously in his left hand, couldn’t be bothered. “Spare me the boring details, Flint!” he says, “Just let me know when the charade is completely ended!” Now, we are talking about a seriously secure and cold-blooded criminal boss here. He’s about to kill Spider-Man and he refers to it as a charade. Back in the death room, Spider-Man starts to show signs of awakening but the water is already reaching them. We have come back to the present time of the cover and, what do you know? It’s only on page 3. The cover looks so monumental that it seems like it must be the climax of this story but it’s only the start. Whether intended or not, this works beautifully. We’re faced with a formidable death trap on the cover, we’re allowed to backtrack out of it on the splash page and we’re right back in it by page 3! What can possibly happen after that? Well, let’s try to get Spidey and JJJ rescued first.

So, what happens? Can Spidey escape? Stan is too accomplished a scripter to let you off that easy. First we must switch scenes to the Daily Bugle where Ned Leeds and Betty Brant have discovered the broken door at Jonah’s office. (In case you’re wondering, we saw the thugs break into Jonah’s office in ASM #51 but we didn’t see the door break. Here, the door is off its top hinge and the window glass is broken. There, it doesn’t look like the door even has a window.) Ned picks up the phone and announces “I’ll call Robertson! He’s City Editor!” “Don’t bother, Leeds!” says the African-American man we saw last issue, “I’m right here.” And in that clever way, Stan informs us of Robbie’s last name and job so that it appears that he’s been part of the supporting cast all along. Robbie tells Ned that he’ll hold down the fort “while you see what you can uncover.” You may recall that Robbie wanted to replace Foswell as crime reporter with Ned Leeds last issue. Now, Betty tries to prevent Ned from venturing out. “You’re not a crime reporter!” she says, “That was Foswell’s job!” “I’ve got a job to do and I’ve got to do it as best I can!” Ned says. So, Ned has just been given Foswell’s job. Perhaps that is telling us something.

Kingpin sends the hood named “Blinker” to pick up Jonah. He then orders the former boss named “Big Turk” to “put the squeeze” on some service stations. When Big Turk implies that this is hardly “the big time,” the Kingpin tells him “this is just a test” to see how he operates. (I’m not sure why Stan is bothering with this. Couldn’t he just have given Big Turk something “big time” to do and cut out this whole conversation? Maybe Stan couldn’t think of anything suitably “big” for Big Turk to do so he covered his lapse by giving Big Turk something small time to do, acknowledged it as small time, and gave a reason why the Kingpin would give him something small time to do. Sounds silly, I know, but, trust me, writers go through such lapses and make such decisions to cover themselves all the time... Or maybe Stan is showing how perceptive the Kingpin is, seeing as Big Turk can’t even handle the small job, which foreshadows Big Turk’s ultimate fall. But I’m getting way ahead of myself.) Anyway, Big Turk heads out with two of his boys to tackle the service stations. One of his gang says, “Anyway, we don’t haveta worry about Spider-Man no more!” (“Spider-Man no more!” That was last issue’s title! Very clever, Stan!)

The thug is wrong, of course. Spidey is back in action. And, wouldn’t you know it? He happens to be web-slinging by when Big Turk and his guys hit a service station. Turk has their take in a briefcase that is yanked out of his hand by webbing. Spidey perches on a wall above the hoods (a nice perspective drawing by Johnny) and starts webbing up their guns. In the next panel, however, Spidey is now standing on top of a wall, low enough for the bad guys to consider rushing him. Spidey strikes out first, punching one guy in the chin with his right hand while shoving another guy in the face with the flat of his left hand.

After bopping Big Turk, Spidey nails three guys using both arms and his right foot. “I sure hope you chaps didn’t eat heavy meals lately!” he says. Big Turk bails out with a guy named Shorty. “There’s always more where they came from,” Big Turk says of the guys they leave behind, “Besides, we gotta tell the Kingpin what we’re up against!” As Big Turk and Shorty peel out, the three hoods that Spidey walloped have turned the tables on him. One grabs his right hand, another tugs on his right arm, the third holds his left arm while trying to get him in a headlock. Spidey breaks free in the next panel, socking two of them with one big swing. There are three goons already lying on the ground, making a total of five in the panel. Add Big Turk and Shorty to the mix and it looks like Spidey was fighting seven guys altogether but there are never more than five shown in any panel. (Unless the whole seven are shown on page 5 panel 2 when Big Turk and Shorty take it on the lam… but the remaining bunch tackling Spidey look like a big blob… at least in my copy.) Spidey grabs two of his defeated foes and demands to know, “Who and what is the Kingpin?” but the police arrive so he decides to cut out. (Plus, it looks like the guys he’s interrogating are unconscious.) He climbs a wall to where he placed his automatic camera but, retrieving it, he recalls that he “told Jameson where to get off” in Amazing Spider-Man #50. “Now I’ve gotta swallow my pride and convince him I was…ulp…only kidding!” he says.

Back at his headquarters, the Kingpin slides back some drapes, revealing a one-way mirror in which he can observe Frederick Foswell whom he has placed in another room. Flint asks, “Why don’tcha just polish him off now?” but the Kingpin has plans for Foswell and instructs Flint to bring him in. Still high on himself, Fred tells the Kingpin “I thought you’d realize you needed me” because “nobody’s ever been able to take over all the mobs before except me.” Starting to feel really smug, Foswell reaches into his jacket pocket. The Kingpin warns him that “the obliterator beam within my walking stick can atomize you before you can make another move.” Foswell assures him, “I’m not cheap hood reaching for a gun!” Instead he is reaching for a cigarette. Once he has it out, he orders Flint to give him a light. Flint balks until the Kingpin orders him to comply. “We’ll get along just fine, Foswell!” says the Kingpin, “I like your style!”

Just then Big Turk and Shorty break in, still riled up over encountering Spidey. “What were ya tryin’ to pull, ya fink!” says Big Turk, then compounds things by calling the Kingpin, “Fatso.” Shorty gets in on the action, saying, “Let’s get ‘im, Big Turk! Nobody can make fools of us the way that lyin’ fink tried to do!” Flint starts to go for his gun and Foswell recedes into the shadows. The Kingpin tells Flint to hold off and stands, planning to handle things himself. Big Turk takes advantage of the situation and clocks Flint, promising to “bounce [Kingpin] all over the place like a hunka blubber.” Shorty tells Big Turk to watch out for Kingpin’s cane but the mob boss promises to humble Big Turk “with my bare hands.”

¡EL FIN DE SPIDERMAN!

As Spidey finds a spot to change back into his Peter duds, he tries to tell himself that he doesn't care what people think but he does. "Everyone flips over the FF," he says, "They think Daredevil's the coolest. Captain America turns 'em on but just mention Spider-Man and freezeville!" (You don't get dialogue like that anyplace other than the 60s, folks!)

As soon as Pete arrives home, Harry meets him at the door to tell him that Anna Watson called to say Aunt May has fallen ill. Harry offers to drive Peter but he figures his motorcycle is faster. As he drives, Peter fears the worst and he's already beating himself over the head for it. "Aunt May must have had another attack!" he says, "And I was too busy playing super-hero to be there when I should have!" (But since he doesn't live with May anymore, he probably wouldn't have been there even if he wasn't "playing super-hero.") Peter rushes into Anna's house, asking what happened. Anna tells him May is now resting, that Doc Bromwell was passing by and gave her a sedative. But before he did, the cloying old bat "kept calling for [Peter], wondering where you were! She was so worried!" (But worried about what? Does May just sit around stewing for no reason?) This gets to Peter, of course, since May is a genius at pushing his buttons even when she is tucked under the covers up to her chin and sound asleep. "If I had been at home like any other normal guy they could have reached me fast!" he thinks. (But so what? What was he going to do?) "But no," he continues, "I was out flexing my muscles trying to help the very people who fear me!"

So, Peter leaves Anna's house looking so down in the mouth, he has to put his hand on the back of his neck to keep his head on. He rides away on his motorcycle and it's a wonder he doesn't crash because he's looking down at the ground rather than watching the road. And he gets into the guilts like you wouldn't believe. "Ever since I moved in with Harry, I've hardly even thought about Aunt May!" he says, "After all, why should I care about her? All she ever did is spend a lifetime looking after me, treating me like her own son!" (Actually, I think if you bothered to look back at the issues since Peter moved in with Harry, which is only the last three before this, you'd find that Peter has thought about May plenty but how do you talk to a guy when he's in a mood like this?) He gets home and realizes that he's too bummed out to study for the "rough exam" he has tomorrow. And, sure enough, next day in Professor Warren's science class, he hardly writes a thing. "If I passed, it'll be a miracle." Warren calls him over and talks to him about his declining grades. He tells him he'd better shape up. Peter promises to start "buckling down." In the ESU hallway, Gwen invites Pete to a "little get-together" at her home tonight but Pete is too worked up over Aunt May to accept. As he walks to his bike, he realizes that Spidey takes so much of his time, he isn't able to do things like go to Gwen's party. "I haven't even had time for dating scatter-brained Mary Jane these days!" he thinks, "Or is she really so scatter-brained? I've never been able to take the time to find out for sure!"

The story begins with Spidey on patrol, looking for Kraven the Hunter. (Spidey, you'll recall, rescued Norman Osborn from the Hunter, which, in the long term, you'd have to agree, turned out to be a big mistake.) "Can't let that tin-horn Tarzan go through life thinking he's beaten me," he says (which Kraven sort of did even if he had to resort to his double-barreled-turns-muscles-to-mush ray to do it.) The weather has turned cold and the snow is coming down in great clumps. This worries our hero, NOT because his long johns aren't very warm but because the snowfall muffles his spider-sense. (So, the spider-sense works like... footsteps?) Lost in thought, (such thoughts consist of: 1. A feeling "that the deadliest fight of my life will soon be coming up!" 2. It's not as cold if he moves fast since "as soon as I start slowing down, it's freezeville!" 3. Since webbing is so expensive, he might as well leap over the rooftops rather than swing over), Peter doesn't notice that he has swung all the way to Municipal Prison. (Where the heck is this prison anyway? Central Park?) This calls him back to himself and, having failed to find Kraven, he decides to go home and hit the sack.

Inside the prison, an old convict lies near death because of a mishap in the prison workshop. The doctor says he cannot live more than an hour but the old man hangs on to life, waiting to speak in private with his cellmate, Blackie Drago. The old man is the Vulture and he promises himself that he "won't cash in until I make sure that Blackie will finish the job I started." He chides himself for not bothering to escape since his sentence was up in another month. Now Blackie will have to escape in his place.

Soon after, Blackie Drago, a scowling, heavy-lidded man with curly black hair, is ushered into the room. The doctor tells him that the Vulture is hanging by a thread but Blackie doesn't seem particularly concerned about it. When he enters the hospital room, Blackie immediately gets on the Vulture, saying, "This is your last chance! You gonna tell me what I wanna know or let it just die with ya?" Blackie has hounded the Vulture for months for the location of his last pair of vulture wings. "I swore you'd never get it out of me," says the Vulture. Now, dying, he gives in, obsessed with the idea of someone destroying Spider-Man for him. But when the Vulture reveals that his wings are stashed just outside the prison ("500 yards from north gun tower near broken pines. I did it months ago so I'd have an extra pair in case police jailed me." Had a lot of faith in himself, didn't he?) Blackie gloats that he arranged the workshop accident that hospitalized the old man, hoping to grab the wings for himself. Now, he will be the new Vulture. Drago taunts his cellmate as he leaves. ("S'long, Vulch! It was nice talking with ya! Yeah, real nice!") The old Vulture rises up on an elbow and reaches out toward Blackie but lacks the strength to fight back. He settles back in his bed and rues his lost opportunity. He is sure he would defeat Spider-Man next time. (And he conjures up some nice Romita illustration-thoughts of punching Spidey in the snoot and kicking the webster in the chest.) Now he'll never have the chance. His only consolation is that Blackie, younger and stronger than he, is sure to destroy the wall-crawler for him.

This all takes place, apparently, during the events of Amazing Spider-Man#34, March 1966 and unfortunately it doesn't make any sense. On page 2 panel 1 of that story, Kraven muses, "I can endure the frustration no longer! I must battle and defeat my greatest mortal enemy or else everything that has gone before is but a hollow mockery!" There is no one else around so he is talking to himself... and fooling himself, apparently, if the "payment for Spidey's murder" retcon is to be believed. Of course, Kraven is still in Africa at that point. It is possible that his honor led him back to the USA and then he encountered the Goblin. But when does that happen? Kraven sneaks back into the country and hides out in one of the Chameleon's old joints. He doesn't dare go out in public because he has "been sentenced never to return to these shores." His plan involves impersonating Spider-Man and attacking J. Jonah Jameson. He poses as Spidey in the days ahead, hoping to draw the real Spider-Man into battle. Spidey does go searching for the imposter and finds him. Kraven, as Spidey, leads the wall-crawler over the rooftops to a block of condemned empty buildings. There he reveals himself as Kraven and the battle begins. So there is no time from his departure from Africa to his battle with Spidey where the Green Goblin should have any reason to know he's in the country. But, let's say the Goblin found out somehow and knew where Kraven was hiding and visited him at the Chameleon's place. Does the "flashback" work now? Well, no, because the battle with Spidey is continuous from Kraven's unveiling to his defeat. There is no time for the Hunter to get a visit from the Goblin's mysterious go-between and to trail him to Osborn mansion in Westchester County. Not only that but Kraven has a lot of nerve claiming that Spidey "beat me by a trick" since the web-slinger essentially beat him by pounding the crap out of him. Note that Kraven makes no such claim in the original.

So what are we to make of this? Clearly, Stan didn't look at ASM #34 and he didn't remember the details of the story. I guess he wasn't kidding all those times he told us Marvel didn't keep any of its back issues. And there's no reason why he should remember the details of this story. After all, Stan was writing dozens of stories a month and Ditko plotted that one. Also, there was no reason for Stan to think that the readers would notice the differences. ASM #34 had come out over a year ago and two years was the expected tenure of a reader at that time. Most of those who read the last Kraven story weren't reading this one, right? Well, maybe or maybe not. The fact is that Stan got a little bit careless here. Like it or not, we're stuck with it.

So, anyway, Kraven has been released from prison and he is thirsting for revenge against Spider-Man. But first he plans on taking down the Green Goblin for pride's sake. (Kraven does a lot of this kind of thing.) Breaking into the morgue room at the Daily Bugle, he reads the paper that reports the Goblin's death by fire, along with Spider-Man's involvement. Enraged that he has been cheated of revenge, Kraven smashes up the file cabinets in the morgue and decides to go after Spidey but first... he needs some money. And he knows right where to go to get some. To Norman Osborn, the Goblin's "flunky." He prowls the dark streets of Manhattan, declaring "No need to travel all the way to Westchester to his house. Osborn has an office, right here in the city somewhere. And it won't take Kraven the Hunter long to find it!" (Yeah, but it might still be less time to go to Westchester seeing as he already knows where that house is.)

Getting away from the quivering wall, Spidey uses his one good arm to grab a lamppost (also quivering), swing around and perch on it. There is smoke coming out of a second story window so Spidey sets up his automatic camera and swings in to see what's going on. He finds a fellow dressed in a brown and yellow quilt standing in front of an opened walk-in safe. There are packets of money on the floor and in an opened suitcase. When the villain turns and blurts out, "Spider-Man!" the web-slinger replies, "Well, I'm not Hubert Humphrey!" "And who was Hubert Humphrey?" I hear you ask. Well, at this point in time, he was Vice President of the United States. When the bad guy threatens to "ram those wise guy words right down [Spidey's] throat, the webhead says, "Not from over there you won't! Unless you can punch clear across a room!" But the villain makes a fist, clicks a button with his thumb and sends out "violent vibrations" towards the wall-crawler. "This is why they call me... the Shocker!" he brags. (So, let's see. Cover blurb: "You and Spidey are about to be jolted by the Sinister Shocker!" Splash page title: "The Sinister Shocker!" Page 2: "This is why they call me... the Shocker!" So I guess this guy's name is... The Shocker?) Spidey has taken his smart pills today and immediately deduces that this "must be how he opened the safe." In the time it takes the web-slinger to dodge the blast, the Shocker packs up the suitcase and starts to head out. But Spidey leaps down, balances with his good arm and springs up catching the Shocker in the jaw with two kicks. ("Now don't get the feeling I'm mad at you," says the wall crawler, "It's just that I hate anybody to skip around town in a jazzier costume than mine!") The Shocker drops the suitcase, which opens again, disgorging money. He turns and administers "a punch with a trip-hammer vibration shock added" that knocks Spidey backwards. He follows up with a left uppercut, claiming "the vibro-shock unit on my fists makes my blows a dozen times more potent than normal" as he punches. He also tells Spidey, "I'm more interested in my stolen wealth than I am in battling my inferiors!" (That's right! His "inferiors!" Hard to imagine the Shocker saying such things these days since he has mostly been reduced to being a joke)

Meanwhile, the wall has been completely demolished. Spidey lies on the rubble in the adjoining room, his feet still dangling on the wall's jagged remains. The Shocker, still on his ego trip, tells the half-conscious web-slinger, "Next time you'll know better than to challenge your superiors!" (He even thinks he is "the most invincible human on Earth." Does he know about "humans" like the Hulk and the Thing?) Then he picks up his suitcase and splits, leaving the wall- crawler to lick his wounds. It is only "seconds later" according to Stan that Spidey recovers but the Shocker is long gone. He gets to one knee and rubs the back of his neck. Then he returns to the window to check on his camera before descending to an alley to change out of his Spidey duds. As he puts a white shirt on over his outfit, Peter muses that his arm is "healing pretty well now!" But deciding to "keep it immobile for a little while longer" he dons a sling and starts walking to the Daily Bugle. Moments later, Harry Osborn pulls up in his convertible and offers Pete a lift. (Does Harry follow Peter around? He keeps showing up to offer Pete a lift in the heart of Manhattan. How does he do it?) Pete tells Harry that he's heading to the Bugle and Harry agrees to take him. Besides, "I've got an offer to make you, son," he tells Peter. Pete climbs in and Harry tells him that he has finally convinced his father that it is too much trouble to drive in to school every day from their home in Westchester. "Don't tell me he's buying you a whirlybird, Harr?" jokes Pete. "Better than that," Harry replies. His dad has gotten him an apartment "just a couple of blocks from campus" and it has two bedrooms. Harry asks Pete to join him as a roommate. When Pete tells him he probably can't afford it, Harry informs him that his dad is "footing the rent bill." Pete tells Harry that he'd "leap at it in a second" but he has to check with Aunt May first. Harry drops him off at the Bugle and Pete muses that, "it's funny the way Harry and I have become real good friends," which mostly happened between issues, didn't it? Let's check. In Amazing Spider-Man #39, August 1966, Harry snaps at Pete, then apologizes, prompting Peter to think "Something must be really bugging him! He's almost acting human!" In Amazing Spider-Man #42, November 1966, Harry defends Pete, telling Flash he's "probably got his reasons" for bowing out of a party. In Amazing Spider-Man #43, December 1966 he tells Flash, "isn't it time that you and Pete buried the hatchet?" In Amazing Spider-Man #44, January 1967, Pete hangs out with Gwen, Flash, and Harry at the Silver Spoon. MJ arrives and Harry is very impressed that Pete knows her. In Amazing Spider-Man #45, February 1967, Harry suggests that Pete could work part-time with his father. And that's about it. Now maybe Harry is just really impressed that Pete is going out with a knockout like Mary Jane but it's a big leap from what we've seen to asking a guy to be your roommate and becoming "real good friends." So, as I said, things must have happened between issues. Meanwhile, Pete further muses over the fact that Harry's father used to be the Green Goblin, a loose end that Peter doesn't seem one bit worried about. Instead, when Harry suggests that "next time you see Mary Jane, lemme know and I'll call Gwen" in order to "make a jazzy double-date," all Pete can think about is that Harry's "sure been seeing a lot of Gwen lately" and wondering why that bothers him. So immersed is Pete in such thoughts that he walks right past Frederick Foswell without responding to his "hello." This suits Foswell just fine because this gives him a chance to change into his Patch disguise and follow Peter in order to learn what connection there is between the college student and the web-slinger. (And Johnny draws Foswell with an evil leer on his face, perhaps foreshadowing the character's slide into crime and his eventual fate. But, er, that's a few months in the future and there's no indication of that as yet.) Meanwhile, Peter heads into JJJ's office with his photos of the Shocker. What transpires over the next five panels is another of Stan's great Jonah-Peter dialogues that deserves to be reprinted in its entirety.
