¡ LA LLEGADA DE KA-ZAR !

As an amnesiac Spider-Man continues to puzzle over his true identity, and live on the streets, his Aunt May's health gets worse and she collapses. As the authorities and the military debate on how to deal with Spider-Man in light of his assisting Dr. Octopus in the recent past, J. Jonah Jameson is appalled that his own son is defending Spider-Man. When news of the arrival of Ka-Zar and his saber-tooth tiger Zabu in New York, Jameson hires Ka-Zar to track down the wall crawler. 

Meanwhile, Harry Osborn searches Peter's room for some clue that could explain his disappearance and comes across a spider-tracer in Peter's closet. Soon news about Spider-Man's possible involvement in the disappearance of Peter Parker hit the press. When Spider-Man overhears the story, he goes to the police station where he admits to George Stacy, his daughter Gwen and John Jameson that he has amnesia and doesn't remember if he had anything to do with Parker's disappearance. 

With Ka-Zar tracking him, Spider-Man decides to visit the Daily Bugle figuring that maybe some newspaper clippings would reveal to him something that might bring back his memory. When confronting Jameson with the fact that he's amnesmatic, Jameson tries to trick Spider-Man into taking off his mask. 

Jameson is foiled when Ka-Zar and Zabu smash through the window and a fight between the trio begins. The battle takes them across the city, where eventually Spider-Man is knocked into a pond in Central Park and is knocked unconcious. With Ka-Zar a victor, he pulls Spider-Man out of the water, announcing that their battle is over, forever.

¡ DESASTRE !

Continued from last issue... Struck with amnesia from his exposure to a weapon nullifier device, Spider-Man is convinced by Dr. Octopus that he is one of his henchmen. Spider-Man, then assists them commit crimes, which make headlines. Spider-Man however, doesn't feel right about what he's doing. Meanwhile, Peter Parker's absence has gotten all his friends and family worries as they have no clue where he could have gone. 

Meanwhile, Dr. Octopus tries to get Spider-Man to unmask, but Spider-Man realizes that if they were really partners, Octopus would already know his secret identity. Spider-Man realizes that he's been tricked and battles Dr. Octopus. Meanwhile, the military has been tracking Spider-Man since his last theft netted Dr. Octopus secret missile plans. 

During the fight, John Jameson manages to immobilize Dr. Octopus with the nullifier. When Dr. Octopus tries to talk Spider-Man into helping him get free, Spider-Man declines. He tells Jameson that he doesn't remember who he is, but he knows for sure that he's no partner of Octopus. When Octopus is taken into custody, Jameson asks Spider-Man to come with them as well. Spider-Man refuses and flees. Later, Spider-Man takes a look his reflection in the a window hoping that it will remind him of who he is, but only sees a stranger looking back at him.

Continued from last issue... Wanting to get revenge on Dr. Octopus for putting his Aunt May in the hospital, Spider-Man begins tracking down the various lairs of his henchmen to try and locate his enemy. Dr. Octopus appears on a monitor screen and taunts Spider-Man that he will not be caught before he launches his latest scheme. Returning to his civilian guise, Peter visits his Aunt May in the hospital, then goes with Mary Jane to his aunts home to assess the damage, when they're joined by Gwen Stacy. Later that night, Dr. Octopus attacks a shipment of a new weapon nullifier device being transported by the military. When Parker is nowhere to be found, Jameson has his home called even though it's 3:00 in the morning, the call is not received very well by Harry Osborn. When Peter tries to stop Dr. Octopus from stealing the device, they fight across a lab owned by Stark Industries. The fight is ultimately ended when Dr. Octopus uses the device on Spider-Man, causing him to be struck with amnesia. Deciding to capitalize on this good fortune, Dr. Octopus convinces Spider-Man that he is a criminal in the employ of Dr. Octopus.

LIVE AT THE RITZ 1988

Guns N’ Roses, aunque les parezca imposible de creer, tiene varios conciertos perfectos. No se dejen engañar por la necedad de Axl Rose y el club de patéticos hueseros con el que sigue haciendo giras por el mundo. La banda de Los Ángeles fue, a finales de los 80, el proyecto más peligroso, poderoso e interesante de la industria. Después fueron atropellados por los excesos, la soberbia y el propio Axl, pero en 1988 había una esperanza para la música con personalidad y carácter, y se llamada Guns and Fucking Roses.

De entre todas las presentaciones en vivo que Guns hizo en sus años más emocionantes, hay una que marcó una huella existencial en toda una generación. Ocurrió un sábado de 1988, en el club The Ritz de Nueva York.

La combinación de factores es irrepetible, y por eso hoy, con nostalgia, le rendimos homenaje.

¿Qué hace a este el “concierto perfecto”?

• Ocurrió en un venue emblemático: The Ritz, un club fundado en 1980 y montado dentro del antiguo Webster Hall en el East Village de NY, fue la sede de cientos de conciertos que fácilmente podrían aparecer en cualquier documental de la historia del rock. Desde aquella histórica presentación de P.I.L., en la que la banda pretendió hacer una “obra de arte” y tocar al mismo tiempo que sus discos sonaban a todo volumen en el sonido local del lugar (obviamente fueron bajados a botellazos), hasta la primera aparición de U2 en Estados Unidos, en 1980. Justamente ahí, debido a su iconicidad y misticismo, MTV decidió construir un proyecto llamado “Live at the Ritz”, una serie de conciertos estelarizados por proyectos de la escena underground transmitido los sábados en la noche. En “Live at the Ritz” aparecieron Run DMC, Iggy Pop, D.R.I, The Cult y por supuesto, Guns N’ Roses.

• Lo dirigió un cineasta arriesgado: Scott Kalvert. Alguna vez fue considerado la nueva gran promesa del cine de culto americano. Dirigió video clips, un documental de Cyndi Lauper, la sesión de Guns N’ Roses desde The Ritz e incluso una película bastante entretenida llamada “Diario de un rebelde”, protagonizada por Leonardo DiCaprio. Con el tiempo sus creaciones se fueron deslavando, hasta terminar en películas de bajo presupuesto y sin alma. Pero habrá que reconocer que la forma en la que retrató a Guns en ese diminuto venue de Nueva York constituye una de las mejores grabaciones de conciertos existente a la fecha.

• El mejor momento de la mejor banda del mundo (de aquellos tiempos): En 1988 no había ningún proyecto musical que se pareciera a Guns N’ Roses. Alejados del glam de su ciudad, decidieron combinar elegantemente el punk con el metal y el pop para crear un sonido que no habíamos escuchado nunca. La gran diferencia entre Guns y sus contemporáneos (Poison, Mötley, Bon Jovi, etc) es que los primeros eran músicos virtuosos, ambiciosos y con una dosis de genialidad que la industria todavía extraña. Obsesionados con el sonido perfecto en vivo, creadores de su propia imagen, conscientes de la importancia del look (su look era, según ellos, no tener look), Guns N’ Roses fue mucho más que una bandita under hypeada por los medios; fue un pilar de la cultura americana durante 5 o 6 años. Este concierto es, justamente, la expresión más clara de lo que eran.

• Tocaron uno de los mejores discos de los 80: Appetite for Destruction. El álbum es, para algunos, el mejor disco de rock de todos los tiempos. No sé si de para tanto, pero lo que si es un hecho es fácilmente podría competir por la mejor grabación de la década de los 80. Y ese disco, track por track, fue presentado en esta sesión.

• Presentaron el cover más famoso que se ha hecho de Bob Dylan: Ese día, tocaron por primera vez el cover a “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” que años después, ocuparía el primer lugar de los charts de todo el planeta.

Guns N’ Roses se separó y la terquedad de su vocalista sepultó, para siempre, el sonido que cambió a la música (para siempre).

No queremos verlos reunidos. Nunca. Queremos recordarlos así, “Live at The Ritz”
