THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN DEL 1 AL 700 (#110, 111)

¡ NACE EL GIBBON !

Spider-Man is upset that Flash Thompson may be a rival for Gwen's affections now that he's a civilian once more. What's worse, he forgot to set his camera to take pictures of the fight he had against the Monks of the Light. In a fit of rage he throws the camera off the roof top realizing too late that he can't afford to buy a new one, but it is saved by an acrobatic man named Martin Blank. Blank, calls himself a freak, Spider-Man tells him that he's not a freak and he should embrace his abilities and not be a harsh judge of his physical appearance. 

Returning to the boarding house where he's staying, Martin reflects on his past and how his love of the Gibbon and the taunts of his classmates led him to join the circus as the human Gibbon. Eventually he couldn't take the laughter of the audience and ran away from the circus and took refuge in the city hoping to start a new life where nobody would laugh at him. He finally decides that after meeting Spider-Man he should do what he's been planning to do. 

Meanwhile, Peter returns home and changes back to his civilian identity. There he finds Gwen and Aunt May waiting for him. When May suddenly changes her tone when she catches herself fussing over Peter, Gwen tells Peter how she and May had an argument about how she is too coddling over Peter. Peter, too tired to do anything passes out in Gwen's arm and she puts him to rest of the couch. When Flash arrives to tell everyone he's okay, Harry asks him to walk Gwen home. Peter wakes up only in time to see Gwen and Flash leave the apartment and assumes the worst before dropping back to sleep. 

After a nightmare, Peter is woken up by Flash, and instantly calls his Aunt May. When there is no answer, he decides to rush out as Spider-Man to see if she's all right. Along the way he's stopped by Martin Blank, who is wearing an ape-inspired costume and calling himself the Gibbon. When Blank tells Spider-Man he's come in hopes that he can become the wall-crawlers partner, this causes Spider-Man to burst out in laughter. This proves to be a mistake, because the wall-crawlers laughing is the straw which breaks the camel's back for the Gibbon, who lashes out at Spider-Man. 

The Gibbon's attack is short lived, when Spider-Man decides that the Gibbon is misguided and not worth fighting, leaving a dejected Gibbon behind to blame himself once more for his failure. Neither are aware that Karven the Hunter has been watching the battle, and hopes to use the Gibbon as a tool for revenge against Spider-Man.

Continued from last issue... Kraven the Hunter, who is still recovering from injuries following his battle against Spider-Man and Ka-Zar in the Savage Land, recruits the Gibbon to battle Spider-Man on his behalf. The Gibbon agrees to do his bidding, as Kraven appeals to the rejects desire to get back at everyone who's ever laughed at him. 

Web-slinging to Aunt May's, Peter finds a note there from her saying that she's gone away for a while. Spidey leaves when the police arrive, and soon Spider-Man is blamed for kidnapping May Parker. Spider-Man quickly quashes this accusation when he goes to Joe Robertson and turns over the note to him, which Joe convinces Jameson to publish when he confronts Jameson over his ethics as a news reporter. 

While at Kraven's lair, the hunter gives the Gibbon a potion that brings out his killer instinct and sends him out on orders to kill Spider-Man. Peter meanwhile has returned home and tells Gwen that Aunt May has left, but tells her not to be hard on herself because her harsh words to Aunt May were long coming. Deciding to search for his Aunt May. His search only puts him in the path of the now savage Gibbon battles Spider-Man, however when pressed to make the killing blow, the Gibbon is unable to do so and fights off the potions effects and passes out. Spider-Man saves him from a nasty fall and decides to take him to get medical help. Back at Kraven's lair, aware of the Gibbons defeat, Kraven stews over the fact that Spider-Man was once again able to best him in battle.

¡ EN LA TIERRA SALVAJE !

As Spider-Man busts up yet another bank robbery, J. Jonah Jameson meets with his fellows at the Daily Bugle to try to find a quick way to bring profits back to the Daily Bugle. When they happen on a news report about an explorer named Mr. Caulkin who's travelled to the Savage Land, and hear his stories about a strange gigantic creature out there, Jameson figures this is the scoop that the Bugle needs to stay afloat and decide to bring some of his staff to the Savage Land in order to snap pictures of this illusive beast. 

When Joe calls Peter to secure him for the expedition, Peter instantly agrees as he needs the money. This upsets Gwen, and Peter decides to take her to the Bugle. When he arrives there Jameson sees what he's has thought was missing from this expedition to begin with: A woman's perspective, and asks Gwen if she'd like to come. In spite of Peter's reservations about the idea, she agrees to come along. 

Traveling to the Savage Land, the group almost has a disaster when their helicopter almost crashes into a pterodactyl. After exploring around for a bit, they come across a statue built by the natives with a giant gong on the front. When Mr. Calkin hits it, it summons the savages who built it, plus the creature they worship, the immense alien creature known as Gog. 

The creature grabs Gwen and leaves, Peter tries to stop the monster but is swatted away and lands in a near by river. Gwen is then taken to a man who's "adopted" the monster, none other than Spider-Man's old foe, Kraven the Hunter. As Caulkin and Jameson go after the monster, they run into Ka-Zar and his sabertooth tiger Zabu and enlist his aid in trying to find Gwen. 

Meanwhile, Peter has changed into Spider-Man and begins his own search for Gwen as well. After fighting off a giant snake, Spider-Man makes a misstep when he accidentally jumps into some quicksand.

" LA BELLA Y EL BRUTO "

Continued from last issue... Spider-Man is caught up in quicksand in the Savage Land, and in spite of his efforts to free himself, nothing works and he is saved at the last minute by Ka-Zar. The two agree to work together to free Gwen from the clutches of the creature known as Gog. 

Elsewhere in the Savage Land, Gog has brought Gwen to Kraven the Hunter, who has decided to take Gwen as his mate. He explains to her that when he heard news reports of the great Ka-Zar, he became determined to travel to the Savage Land to prove that he's the superior hunter. Upon arriving in the Savage Land though, he came across a crashed alien ship which contained Gog inside. Gog was just a tiny creature then, and he "adopted" the creature and helped it grow and it became his loyal "son". He finishes his exposition by explaining that he intend to use Gog for his own personal gain. 

This is when Spider-Man and Ka-Zar arrive and battle both Kraven and Gog. Ka-Zar and Kraven clash, and in spite of Kraven's many hunting devices, Ka-Zar proves to be the victor of the fight, driving Kraven off a cliff. Spider-Man meanwhile is left to deal with Gog, where he defeats the creature by driving it into the same quicksand he got caught up in, the creature then sinks to it's ultimate demise. Ka-Zar then rushes Gwen back to Jameson and Caulkin. When she asks what happened to Peter, Jameson has figured that Parker died trying to stop Gog from capturing her, however Spider-Man swings back to the others and changes back to Peter and shocks everyone. After thanking Ka-Zar for his help and bidding him farewell, they depart from the Savage Land.

¡ LOS SINISTER SIX !

Having broken out of prison, Dr. Octopus gathers Mysterio, Electro, Kraven the Hunter, the Vulture and Sandman to get revenge against Spider-Man as the Sinister Six. Meanwhile, Spider-Man has once more found that his spider powers have faded and has to exercise more caution getting back home lest someone take advantage of his lost powers to find out his secret identity. 

As Peter wanders the city lost in thought over all the stress caused because of his Spider-Man identity, he doesn't turn up to school. This prompts the school to call his Aunt May. Worried about Peter, he goes to Betty Brant for help, and they in turn see if J. Jonah Jameson has seen Peter recently. This makes them a target for the Sinister Six, who had decided to use Betty Brant as bait to lure out Spider-Man, and so they kidnap both Betty and Aunt May. 

When Peter shows up at the Bugle, he arrives just in time to see the Vulture delivering a message to Jameson. The Vulture tells him that the Sinister Six has gone to six different locations and at each location has a clue to the whereabouts of Betty Brant and Aunt May. While super-heroes all over the city try to find Spider-Man, Peter decides that powers or no powers, he's going to try and save his Aunt May and Betty from his enemies. 

He goes to the first location, the local power plant owned by Stark Industries, Peter faces Electro. During the fight he realizes that his powers have returned, and is able to easily defeat Electro and learn the next location he is supposed to go to. When Iron Man arrives to offer help, Spider-Man refuses. 

His next fight is with Kraven the Hunter who attacks Spider-Man in Central Park with three tigers. Spider-Man easily fights off the attackers and secures the next clue. Along the way he's offered help by the Human Torch, and once again Spider-Man refuses help. His next location is controlled by Mysterio who sends robots based on the X-Men to attack the wall-crawler. Spider-Man easily defeats the robots and Mysterio. Although Mysterio is defeated the next clue is set ablaze, Spider-Man is able to recover it's message with his web-fluid. 

His next battle is against Sandman, he manages to best this foe when they are sealed in an airless room, and Spider-Man is able to defeat Sandman with his superior lung capacity. Next he battles the Vulture high over the city and manages to defeat him as well gaining the location of Dr. Octopus who has been holding Betty Brant and Aunt May hostage (May being completely oblivious to her situation believes that they are guests being hosted by Octavius.)

There, Spider-Man battles Octopus and his mechanical arms, their fight takes them to a giant fishbowl where Octopus battles Spider-Man in his "natural habitat", however Spider-Man manages to defeat Octopus by filling the tank up with his webbing and tangling Octavius up in said webs. Spider-Man frees Aunt May and Betty Brant. Returning to his civilian guise, he meets up with them as Peter Parker where they are happily reunited, although Aunt May is upset with Peter over skipping class. Jameson is once more made a fool when he has to publish a story about how heroic Spider-Man is, and as for the Sinister Six? They were all rounded up by the authorities and have been put in prison.

Elsewhere, Kraven the Hunter is watching the news on a bamboo-styled TV that looks like something the Professor put together on Gilligan's Island. He is filled with jealousy over the newfound notoriety of the new Vulture, who is "now considered the city's deadliest menace." Seething that "I'm the one who first beat Spider-Man." and "No wing-flapping, flying fool can steal my glory from me!", (smashing a big vase with a swipe from his hand while standing on a tiger-skin rug with a big elephant head mounted on his wall). Kraven then takes his frustrations out on his tiger Rajah. He releases the big cat, grapples with it, wraps his hands around its neck, throws it around, and allows it to slink back to its cage while shaking his fist at it. "Next I shall crush the Vulture", he proclaims, his fists clenched before him. He ventures out, scaling a building by hand. "Wherever the Vulture may fly, Kraven will bring him down," he says, "So, let the hunt begin."

So, now, is it the next day, or what? It must be, since Harry came home in the middle of the night and now May and Anna are showing up for a visit. I don't know why they're doing this since he wasn't even home for their last visit...whenever THAT was...but that's what they're doing and they are sorry to see him still in bed, "with his Spidey suit on, no less!" (Although they don't know that part.)

Okay, hold it. If it is the next day, why didn't Pete change out of his Spidey suit sometime during the night? Did he just pass out after talking to Harry? And if it's not the next day, why are May and Anna visiting in the middle of the night? May is surprised that Pete is still in bed and Pete claims he's about to talk a nap, so it can't be the middle of the night, right? Except when May worries over him, he tells her all he needs is a good night's sleep which implies that he didn't just have one so it seems that May and Anna are visiting in the middle of the night. Just what exactly is going on? What time is it? I've got no answers for you. I'm moving on.

Pete is very nervous that someone will pull off his bedcovers and reveal his duds, but all Aunt May does when she approaches is feel his forehead. She discovers that Pete still has a fever. Over her nephew's protestations, May calls Dr. Bromwell to request a house call. ("You don't want to worry your Auntie," she says. "Auntie?" She calls herself "Auntie?") On the phone to Bromwell, May discovers he is in surgery. She asks that he come over as soon as possible. (The guy is a surgeon and he does house calls! Where can I find a doctor like that?) As all the others finally leave his room, Pete leaps up to remove his Spidey suit. ("I'm sure lucky the Doc is busy," he says, "Now's my chance to peel off my Spidey suit" as if Bromwell will teleport over instantaneously.) He discovers that he is already feeling MUCH better but, even so, he must stay in bed and wait for Dr. Bromwell in order to satisfy Aunt May. He climbs back under the covers, props his head on his fist, and considers it lucky that "the Vulture isn't acting up along about now!"

EN MANOS DEL CAZADOR!

This all takes place, apparently, during the events of Amazing Spider-Man#34, March 1966 and unfortunately it doesn't make any sense. On page 2 panel 1 of that story, Kraven muses, "I can endure the frustration no longer! I must battle and defeat my greatest mortal enemy or else everything that has gone before is but a hollow mockery!" There is no one else around so he is talking to himself... and fooling himself, apparently, if the "payment for Spidey's murder" retcon is to be believed. Of course, Kraven is still in Africa at that point. It is possible that his honor led him back to the USA and then he encountered the Goblin. But when does that happen? Kraven sneaks back into the country and hides out in one of the Chameleon's old joints. He doesn't dare go out in public because he has "been sentenced never to return to these shores." His plan involves impersonating Spider-Man and attacking J. Jonah Jameson. He poses as Spidey in the days ahead, hoping to draw the real Spider-Man into battle. Spidey does go searching for the imposter and finds him. Kraven, as Spidey, leads the wall-crawler over the rooftops to a block of condemned empty buildings. There he reveals himself as Kraven and the battle begins. So there is no time from his departure from Africa to his battle with Spidey where the Green Goblin should have any reason to know he's in the country. But, let's say the Goblin found out somehow and knew where Kraven was hiding and visited him at the Chameleon's place. Does the "flashback" work now? Well, no, because the battle with Spidey is continuous from Kraven's unveiling to his defeat. There is no time for the Hunter to get a visit from the Goblin's mysterious go-between and to trail him to Osborn mansion in Westchester County. Not only that but Kraven has a lot of nerve claiming that Spidey "beat me by a trick" since the web-slinger essentially beat him by pounding the crap out of him. Note that Kraven makes no such claim in the original.

So what are we to make of this? Clearly, Stan didn't look at ASM #34 and he didn't remember the details of the story. I guess he wasn't kidding all those times he told us Marvel didn't keep any of its back issues. And there's no reason why he should remember the details of this story. After all, Stan was writing dozens of stories a month and Ditko plotted that one. Also, there was no reason for Stan to think that the readers would notice the differences. ASM #34 had come out over a year ago and two years was the expected tenure of a reader at that time. Most of those who read the last Kraven story weren't reading this one, right? Well, maybe or maybe not. The fact is that Stan got a little bit careless here. Like it or not, we're stuck with it.

So, anyway, Kraven has been released from prison and he is thirsting for revenge against Spider-Man. But first he plans on taking down the Green Goblin for pride's sake. (Kraven does a lot of this kind of thing.) Breaking into the morgue room at the Daily Bugle, he reads the paper that reports the Goblin's death by fire, along with Spider-Man's involvement. Enraged that he has been cheated of revenge, Kraven smashes up the file cabinets in the morgue and decides to go after Spidey but first... he needs some money. And he knows right where to go to get some. To Norman Osborn, the Goblin's "flunky." He prowls the dark streets of Manhattan, declaring "No need to travel all the way to Westchester to his house. Osborn has an office, right here in the city somewhere. And it won't take Kraven the Hunter long to find it!" (Yeah, but it might still be less time to go to Westchester seeing as he already knows where that house is.)

La Emoción de la Caza

Kraven el cazador camina alrededor de su sala de trofeos, planeando su venganza contra Spider-Man y su regreso a América. Mientras tanto, Betty Brant se enfrenta a Pedro para revelar su secreto, y Pete finalmente cede y se revela como Spider-Man ... pero Betty se despierta para darse cuenta de que era sólo una pesadilla. Pete se remonta a la escuela alivio ahora que la tía May tiene un certificado de buena salud. Al tratar de ir sobre un día normal, se pone rechazado por Gwen Stacy y Harry Osborn por ser anti-social. Entonces vemos Spider-Man acecho movimientos J. Jonah Jameson y trata de esquina. huye Jameson y Spider-Man es visto como un ataque a él en lugar y huye. Vemos que en realidad es Kraven que se disfraza como Spider-Man.Pete se entera el embaucador corriendo, y decide que lo haga para los próximos días. Para salvar su reputación, finalmente rastrea y persigue el impostor de averiguar quién es. Cuando se le sigue a un edificio abandonado, se encuentra con Kraven aerosoles que una niebla anulando su sentido arácnido. Spider-Man da la vuelta al edificio, repleto de trampas, y finalmente batallas Kraven.Que el comercio golpes antes de una banda de ladrones hace trasladar su lucha. Pronto, Spider-Man le da un golpe de gracia final y entrega de la banda y Kraven en una tela de araña limpio para la policía. Kraven entonces confiesa su suplantación de Spider-Man a la policía y borra el nombre de Spider-Man. Jameson se entera de las noticias y con enfado rechaza una secretaria que un reemplazo de Betty como ella ha dejado sin previo aviso. Pete se está convirtiendo más en su mente pensamientos de Betty, sin saber de su desaparición. Pete se da cuenta que debe seguir adelante como lo aceptó su destino como Spider-Man, pero Betty nunca.
